Join us for a five-day odyssey of discovery as we explore Brevard’s coastal ocean, the Indian River Lagoon, and small creeks.

Adventurers will engage in hands-on activities to examine coastal processes including beach erosion and nourishment, consequences of freshwater delivery to the Indian River Lagoon, and transport and fate of pollutants in coastal systems.

Participants will learn how to use a variety of field and laboratory instruments for measuring environmental characteristics and standard techniques for biological sampling.

Field and laboratory activities will include:

  • Examination of beach processes and consequences of nourishment.
  • Boat tour of the Indian River Lagoon Ecosystem.
  • Water quality testing and determination of nutrient concentrations in coastal waters, sampling and identification of estuarine and marine plankton
  • Seining seagrass beds to examine their role as important habitat for a variety of fish and invertebrates
  • Field Trips to the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian River Lagoon, and small area creeks
